Review & Giveaway: Taking out the Guesswork with pawTree® Customized Nutritional Plans

Review & Giveaway: Taking out the Guesswork with pawTree® Customized Nutritional Plans

The Chesnut Mutts were compensated in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are genuinely mine and we would not share a product that we did not fully believe in. Please do not use any image without permission.

With all the dog foods out there it can get confusing on which one to pick for your pup. Grain-free, healthy weight, skin & coat, which protein should I choose, and what about supplements? Well, now you can get help with pawTree®'s customized nutrition plan where you answer questions about your dog and get recommendations on which of their food you should buy.

pawTree started just because of the reasons I stated above. It makes it easier for pet parents to choose a quality food without being overwhelmed by all the options out there. We learned about pawTree last year at the 2015 BlogPaws conference and were first impressed with their pawTreats (a review just for those coming soon), but then learned about their customized nutrition plan that was developed by veterinarians and nutritionists. Also, you can become a petPro and make cash selling their products with your own schedule.

This year at BlogPaws, we met Roger Morgan who is the founder and CEO of pawTree! Just by talking to him I could really tell the passion he had behind his products. Let's get started by walking you through what it is like setting up a Pet Profile.

Bailey's Pet Profile on pawTree

I decided to do the nutritional plan for Bailey. Even though they do ask about allergies in the questionnaire, Jada's are too severe. So they ask you the basics, name, breed, gender, if they are spayed/neutered, size. Some of the more in-depth questions are the ideal weight you want your pet to be, their energy level, if your dog is a picky eater, and there is a long list of issues you would like to address like hot spots, seasonal allergies, bad gas, oral health, and many others.

After you complete the questionnaire, you can customize the bag of food with your dog's name and photo. I decided on Bailey's Bites! They will recommend you a recipe based on the Pet Profile questions, but if you want to change it you are welcome to. Besides food, they also will recommend you supplements and treats and show you how much it would cost to feed daily for all the items. So for Bailey, she got the Real Chicken & Sweet Potato Recipe, Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, and two bags of pawTreats.

Looking at the ingredients, I like seeing the chicken, dried peas, dried chickpeas, dried sweet potatoes, coconut and salmon oils up at the top of the list. We have vitamins and minerals with some added dried fruits and veggies after that such as pumpkin, cranberries, blueberries, apples, spinach, and parsley. I do like seeing whole foods like that higher up as the lower it is in the list means there is less of that ingredient.

Ok, that is kinda cute. Helpful for people with multiple dogs with multiple needs!

"You gonna give me that, right?"

This food contains lots of great benefits and should help your dog in all parts of their body from heart health, bone health, brain development, healthy skin and coat, joint health, and even reducing stool volume. This is all because of all the good stuff you will be feeding your pet with no added preservatives, colors, or flavors, and no corn, soy, or wheat!

So did Bailey like the food? Yeah, I'd say she enjoyed it! pawTree says that I should see a difference in Bailey's overall health after feeding their food for 90 days. It really depends on what food you switched from, but I am pretty happy with the ingredients and everything is made in the U.S.A. so that is always nice! Compared to a lot of retail kibbles this one is a lot better. So if you want to stick with kibble, give pawTree a chance.

pawTree Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil

So what about the other items you can get in your nutritional plan? Compared on what issues you chose, you will be offered different items. For Bailey, I said she had seasonal allergies (what dog doesn't at this point, honestly) and their Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil was recommend. For her size, she gets one squirt of the bottle a day and she scarfs up her food with a lot more gusto compared to plain kibble.

pawTreats

Bailey and pawTreats from pawTree

We also got two bags of pawTreats which are these amazing limited ingredient freeze-dried treats! We will be doing a full review on them in the next couple of weeks so keep an eye out for that. But the only ingredients they have are the ones that are listed on the front of the bag.

In a Nutshell...

  • pawTree® was started to give better food choices to pets and to help pet parents narrow down all those food options
  • What is cool about pawTree is that you can get a customized nutritional plan for your dog based on a questionnaire
  • The food has great ingredients and the supplements and treats are also so great for your pup
  • Everything is made in the U.S.A.

pawTree really helps beginners get on the right path in terms of dog nutrition. I know a bit, but it can get confusing and I know this will be so helpful for most of you out there who are struggling to figure it all out. So relax, and let pawTree do the work for you!

  1. I have struggled for years finding the right food for Sadie. She will do well with a food for a couple of months and then she will have digestive issues from it. She has a sensitive stomach so I always have to look at the ingredients to see if they are good for her. She is also doing much better on grain free kibble.

  4. i dont really struggle too much anymore. i know exactly what i am looking for when i buy dog food and treats. no by products, no additional salt, sugar, fillers, etc. i read the ingredients on everything i buy for my dogs. i even read where toys are made and processed. my middle child will eat anything and everything, she is a real foodie. although one thing i have found she does not like very much are bananas but she will eat them. the baby is picky. i had a hard time with her when she was a baby. she is 6 soon to be 7. she is very picky. one day she will eat her food and the next she decides she does not like it. the same food. but she eventually will eat it if she is hungry, i had to stop babying her when she does this. the oldest was picky when she was a baby, but i did not know much abt dog food. that was 15 yrs ago. she is fine now.

  5. I use to struggle not knowing what is the best until I joined pawTree and made the switch. Now I know what my dogs are eating and that it is good for them. We love pawTree!!

  6. I absolutely do struggle with my one dog Roxy she is a tough cookie I guess it's because her teeth are really bad and maybe just maybe it's hard for her to chew hard dog food, but even the wet dog food she doesn't even budge to eat it which sucks because she's a dog and supposed to be eating dog food. I just don't know what to do so I'm stuck giving her some cheeseburger from either Mcds or BK and that isn't totally healthy and beneficial for her she needs the nutrients.

    1. Hm, that seems like something I would go to the vet for. It could be an underlying medical issue and bad teeth can definitely make it hurt to eat. My mom has a pomeranian who had super bad teeth and after getting a lot of them removed she is so much healthier and eating better. Cheeseburgers are definitely not gonna do Roxy much good in the long run! ;)

  7. I used to really struggle with finding foods the pups food that they would tolerate and still keep things interesting for them. I like adding foods to their rotation so it's always great to find a new food that works for them. I have learned to make a homemade topper to add to kibble so I know exactly what they are eating plus they are getting people food so they get super excited

  12. I also don't have difficult time finding the right stuffs to buy for my dog, with the help of these blogs, forums and sometimes vet's recommendation. Commercial dog food nowadays is full of clever marketing so be very smart in buying. There are tons of information over the internet that you might find helpful.

    1. See if you can get some more fiber in his diet! pawTree has that as one of the issues you can address, but in the meantime you can see if adding canned pumpkin to his food helps :)

    1. I take a lot of factors into count like: will the dog eat it? do they like it? do they seem healthy (look at skin, coat, and general energy level)? is the price right to feed this to my dog on a regular basis?

  19. Yes, formulas change, standards change. It's hard to keep up.

  22. The problem is unless one buys personalized food, dog food isn't one size fits all. I cycle my dog's food so they don't get too much of one nutrient and bags posts food serving size, but is not specific to each individual dog's nutritional needs.

    1. Very true and that's a great idea to rotate! I think it is a great idea to grasp your dog's needs and go from there.

  30. Yes and no. Shiloh in particular does very well on his food. He's happy, healthy, and fit. But sometimes reading reviews of these "great" new foods, I wonder if it could be even better. Wager is a little more of a struggle. He has more issues, but is also more sensitive. I've tried to change his diet- even just to what Shiloh is on- and it never goes well. I'm not sure if I'm 100% happy with his right now, but it seems to be at a nice stable, balanced place and I'm reluctant to change it.

    1. I understand! It can be pretty difficult. I have had friends with dogs who are on some really bad quality food, but once they switch to something else the dog has stomach issues. Always make sure you transition slowly, but if it still doesn't work out you might just be stuck. Otherwise I would try again once the dog is stable again.

    1. I usually start with the suggestion on the bag or use a calculator () to get it more specific. It really differs between the dog though, Jada packs on weight really easily and is 12-13 lbs but gets the same amount of food as Bailey who is 10 lbs.
